'Veronica Mars' Revival: Everything We Know About the Hulu Limited Series
Marshmallows, unite! Veronica Mars will be back with a limited series revival following a 2014 fan-funded movie and three seasons of the UPN-turned-CW drama. To celebrate, Us Weekly has rounded up everything we know about the private detective’s highly anticipated return to television.
Hulu announced in September 2018 that eight new episodes of the series would be released on the streaming service in 2019. Naturally, Kristen Bell, who plays the titular sleuth, was the first to return with an enthusiastic Instagram post. “Attention all Marshmallows: BREAKING NEWS!!!!! We are OFFICIALLY back in business!!! A new #veronicamars series is coming back, on @hulu!!!!” the Frozen star wrote in September. “Veronica has always been a super hero without a cape. And I think shes exactly what the world needs right now. Thank you to all my fellow marshmallows who stayed excited. Thank you to @hulu for the opportunity. I hope we’re still friends after I taser … you.”
The official logline — released in September 2018 — for the revival read: “Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.”
After fans noticed the description’s similarity to series creator Rob Thomas’ 2014 Veronica Mars book, The Thousand Dollar Tan Line, the executive producer tweeted in September 2018: “Like THE THOUSAND DOLLAR TAN LINE, the mini-series will be set against a Spring Break backdrop, but TDTL is NOT the story we’re telling. We’re five years after the movie.” The writer teased more details, too. “The movie was nostalgic. The Hulu limited series isn’t going to be,” he added. “Hardcore So-Cal noir. One big case. Eight episodes to tell the story. This is a detective show. … Pony is included. Marcia Langdon is police chief. Spoiler: Neptune finally incorporated.”
Thomas confirmed on Twitter in September 2018 that Jason Dohring would reprise his role as Logan Echolls. Last fans saw the brooding, reformed bad boy, he was headed back to the military after being cleared of murder and reuniting with Veronica in the movie.
Percy Daggs III (Wallace Fennel), Enrico Colantoni (Keith Mars), Francis Capra (Eli “Weevil” Navarro), Ryan Hansen (Dick Casablancas), Max Greenfield (Leo D’Amato) and David Starzyk (Richard Casablancas) are set to reprise their roles from the original series, too.
This limited series is sure to have star power. J.K. Simmons joined the cast in November 2018 as an ex-con who works as Big Dick Casablancas’ fixer. Patton Oswalt also came on board that month as a pizza delivery man/true crime fanatic. Dawnn Lewis and Kirby Howell-Baptiste were cast as Langdon and a Neptune nightclub owner, respectively. Clifton Collins Jr. was announced as a cartel hitman, while Izabela Vidovic’s character was labeled as a teenager looking for justice.
Thomas revealed on Twitter in September 2018 that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar would be working in the writers’ room. Veronica Mars vet Diane Ruggiero, David Walpert, Heather V. Regnier and Raymond Obstfeld were also announced at the time.
Bell gave fans a behind-the-scenes peek when she shared an Instagram photo of the first episode’s script in November 2018. The title? “Spring Break Forever.” The actress added in her caption: “THINGS ARE HAPPENING TODAY! AND ITS ALL FOR YOU MY LOVELY MARSHMALLOWS! #veronicamars.”
Thomas posted a photo from the first table read on Twitter in November 2018. “This is some indication of who is in episode 1,” he wrote of the cast pic. “It doesn’t mean your fave doesn’t come in later.”
Hulu released a trailer for season 4 in June 2019. In addition to expanding on the bombing mystery that will take center stage, fans got a glimpse of several familiar faces, including Weevil, Dick, Richard Casablancas and Liam Fitzpatrick. Veronica and Keith discussed his potential retirement and acquainted themselves with Simmons’ character, the apparent Big Bad. Logan and Veronica also seemed to hit a roadblock in their relationship as the P.I. mused that she was the “destructive gene” in their romance.
Dohring hinted at Logan and Veronica’s dynamic in Us Weekly’s summer TV preview in June 2019. “She’s in a different place than she was, and he’s sort of the balance to what she’s going through,” he explained, noting that the couple live together in the revival episodes. “She’s become a bit hardened by all the stuff she’s seen, and that creates some struggles for them.”
