About

David Furnish is a Canadian filmmaker and the husband of musician Elton John. Furnish gravitated towards music and performing arts growing up and particularly enjoyed drama classes. He attended college in Canada and obtained an honors bachelor’s of business administration from the University of Western Ontario in 1985. Shortly after graduation, he relocated to England to work in advertising.

The filmmaker struggled with his sexuality for much of his life and cited it as one of his reasons for relocating. In England, Furnish worked for Ogilvy & Mather and quickly became the advertising agency’s youngest director. A few years later, Furnish began pursuing film, first landing a minor role in 1997 on the sitcom The Nanny and later earning his first producing credits with 1999’s Women Talking Dirty. He boasts screenwriting and producing credits for works such as It’s a Boy Girl Thing (2006), Gnomeo and Juliet (2011) and Elton John: Never Too Late (2024).

Furnish actively campaigns for LGBTQ+ rights and serves as chairman of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

In 1993, he met his future spouse after attending a friend’s dinner party. The couple entered a civil partnership in 2005 and officially wed in 2014 after England legalized gay marriage. They share sons Zachary Jackson (born in 2010) and Elijah Joseph (born in 2013).
