Gwendoline Christie

Gwendoline Christie is an English actress best known for starring on HBO’s Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Sandman and Wednesday. Christie was raised in West Sussex, England, where she trained as a gymnast in her youth before a spinal injury ended her athletic pursuits. She later studied acting at the Drama Centre London, graduating in 2005.

Christie began her career on stage and in experimental short films before landing early screen roles in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) and The Zero Theorem (2013). Her breakout role came in 2012, when she was cast as Brienne of Tarth on Game of Thrones, a role she played through the show’s eighth and final season. Her performance earned her an Emmy nomination in 2019 for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

Following Game of Thrones, Christie joined the Star Wars franchise as Captain Phasma in The Force Awakens (2015) and The Last Jedi (2017). She went on to appear in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 (2015), In Fabric (2018) and played Lucifer in Netflix’s The Sandman. In 2022, she joined the cast of the hit Netflix series Wednesday as Principal Larissa Weems. She later joined season 2 of Apple TV+’s Severance as Lorne.

Christie has been in a long-term relationship with fashion designer Giles Deacon since 2014.
