Kevin Smith is a filmmaker, actor and writer. Smith was raised in Highlands, New Jersey. He attended Henry Hudson Regional High School and briefly enrolled at The New School in New York City before dropping out. He later studied at Vancouver Film School but left early to make his first film.

Smith gained recognition in 1994 with his debut feature Clerks, starring himself, Jason Mewes and Jeff Anderson. Smith financed on credit cards and filmed at the convenience store where he worked. The low-budget indie premiered at Sundance and earned the Filmmaker’s Trophy, which helped launch his career. He later built a loyal fanbase with interconnected films featuring recurring characters like Jay and Silent Bob.

His film credits include Mallrats (1995), Chasing Amy (1997), Dogma (1999), Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008) and Clerks III (2022). He has also directed episodes of The Flash and Supergirl and launched several successful podcasts including “Fatman Beyond” and “Hollywood Babble-On.”

In 2018, he suffered a major heart attack, and he has since publicly documented his recovery and weight loss.

Smith married actress and journalist Jennifer Schwalbach Smith in 1999. The couple welcomed daughter Harley Quinn Smith in 1999, and she has appeared in several of his films including Yoga Hosers (2016) and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019).
