Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox (born Michael Andrew Fox) is an Emmy-winning Canadian-American actor best known for starring in the Back to the Future trilogy and on the sitcom Family Ties. Fox moved frequently as a child and eventually settled in Burnaby, British Columbia. He left high school before graduating to pursue acting in Los Angeles but later earned his GED.

Fox began his acting career in the late 1970s with small roles on television. He rose to fame in 1982 as Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties, which ran for seven seasons and earned him three Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. He became a household name in 1985 with the release of Back to the Future, where he played time-traveling teen Marty McFly.

The Emmy winner continued his success with roles in Teen Wolf (1985), The Secret of My Success (1987) and Doc Hollywood (1991). He was later awarded an Emmy and Golden Globe award for his role as Mike Flaherty on Spin City, which he played from 1996 to 2001.

In 1991, the actor was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and went public with his diagnosis in 1998. He has since become a prominent advocate for Parkinson’s research through The Michael J. Fox Foundation. He has also authored multiple memoirs, including his autobiography Lucky Man: A Memoir.

Fox married actress Tracy Pollan in 1988. They share children Sam (born in 1989), twin daughters Aquinnah and Schuyler (born in 1995) and Esmé (born in 2001).
