Nadya Suleman
Nadya Suleman became widely known as “Octomom” when she gave birth to octuplets — Noah, Maliyah, Isaiah, Nariyah, Jonah, Makai, Josiah and Jeremiah — in 2009 via IVF. Suleman previously welcomed six children: Elijah (born in 2001), Amerah (born in 2002), Joshua (born in 2003), Aiden (born in 2005) and fraternal twins Calyssa and Caleb (born in 2006).
Two years after the octuplets were born, the California Medical Board found that Dr. Michael Kamrava had transferred 12 embryos into Suleman’s uterus instead of the six that she allegedly requested. Kamrava’s medical license was revoked in July 2011. Suleman was later accused of welfare fraud for failing to disclose more than $26,000 she earned through public assistance funds to care for her 14 children. She was sentenced to 200 hours of community service, a small fine and two years of probation.
Suleman married Marco Gutierrez in 1996, but the pair separated in 2000. Gutierrez filed for divorce in 2006, and the proceedings were finalized in 2008.
