Neil Patrick Harris is best known for his roles as the title character on Doogie Howser, M.D., Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother and as Count Olaf in Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. He portrayed the title role of Broadway’s Hedwig and the Angry Inch in 2014, earning a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical.
Harris publicly came out as gay in 2006, two years after he began dating David Burtka. The couple welcomed twins Gideon Scott and Harper Grace in 2010. When the Marriage Equality Act in New York passed in 2011, Harris and Burtka announced they had been secretly engaged for five years. The couple tied the knot in 2014 in Italy.
In 2015, Harris became the first openly gay man to host the Oscars. He has hosted the Emmy Awards and Tony Awards four times. His stints as Tonys host earned him four consecutive Emmy Award wins from 2012 to 2014 for Outstanding Special Class Program.
