Sara Ramirez is an actor and singer best known for playing Dr. Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy and Che Díaz on And Just Like That. Ramirez was born in Sinaloa, Mexico and moved to the United States at a young age, growing up in San Diego, California. They studied at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts and later graduated from the Juilliard School with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts.

Ramirez made their Broadway debut in The Capeman in 1998, followed by supporting roles in films such as You’ve Got Mail (1998) and guest appearances on TV series including Spin City and Law & Order: SVU. Their breakout came in 2005 when they won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for their role in Spamalot.

In 2006, Ramirez joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy as orthopedic surgeon Dr. Callie Torres, becoming one of the longest-running LGBTQIA+ characters on U.S. television. They left the series in 2016 and joined the cast of Madam Secretary the following year. In 2021, Ramirez debuted as Che Díaz on HBO Max’s Sex and the City reboot And Just Like That. They have also been involved in the music industry and released a self-titled EP in 2011, which included the single “Silent Night.”

In 2016, Ramirez came out as bisexual, and they later came out as non-binary in 2020. They married business analyst Ryan DeBolt in 2012. The couple separated in 2018 and finalized their divorce in 2021.
