About

Tonya Harding is a former professional figure skater best known for her alleged involvement in the 1992 attack on fellow Olympian Nancy Kerrigan.

Harding started skating at a young age, eventually becoming the first female athlete to perform a triple axel in a short program. Harding competed at the 1992 and 1994 Olympics, where she finished in fourth and eighth place, respectively.

Ahead of Harding’s Olympics debut, Kerrigan was deemed her biggest skating rival for a slot on the Team USA roster. Harding’s then-husband, Jeff Gillooly, orchestrated an attack on Kerrigan, in which she was struck in the leg during the U.S. Nationals. Harding was accused of having knowledge of Gillooly’s plan, which she has continued to deny. Harding was ultimately banned from the U.S. Figure Skating Association for life. The scandal inspired 2017’s I, Tonya, where Margot Robbie portrayed Harding.

Harding participated on Dancing With the Stars season 26, which was dubbed as the “all-athletes” competition. Harding and pro partner Sasha Farber finished in third place.

Harding and Gillooly were married between 1990 and 1993. After their divorce, she moved on with Michael Smith and they wed in 1995 but split the next year. She tied the knot with Joseph Jens Price in 2010.
