Amy Winehouse

Breakthrough British soul singer Amy Winehouse was born on September 14, 1983 in North London.

She first made her mark on the British music charts in 2004 with her debut album, Frank. Winehouse’s single “Rehab,” from the 2006 album Back to Black catapulted her to American stardom, but also hit close to home, due to her battle with an addiction to nicotine and crack cocaine.

In June 2008, the troubled singer was diagnosed with emphysema and continues to refuse rehabilitation treatment. The performer married Blake Fielder-Civil in May 2007. The marriage ended in divorce in August 2009.

Winehouse was found dead in her Camden Square apartment on July 23, 2011.
