About

She is the daughter of actress Kate Capshaw and businessman Robert Capshaw. After her parents divorced when she was three, her mother married renowned director Steven Spielberg in 1991, making Spielberg her stepfather. Capshaw made her television debut in the 1996-97 ABC police drama High Incident, cocreated by Spielberg. She also appeared in the 1997 drama The Locusts, which featured her mother, Kate Capshaw.

Capshaw gained recognition for her role as Jamie Stringer on the ABC legal drama series The Practice from 2002 to 2004. In 2009, she joined the cast of Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Arizona Robbins, a pediatric surgeon. Initially introduced for a multi-episode arc, she became a series regular and portrayed the character until 2018. Her role was significant for representing one of the first openly lesbian main characters on a major network television show.

In 2024, Capshaw launched a podcast titled “Call It What It Is” with her former Grey’s Anatomy costar Camilla Luddington. The podcast delves into their personal experiences, friendships, and various topics related to their lives and careers.

Jessica Capshaw married entrepreneur Christopher Gavigan on May 22, 2004. Gavigan is the co-founder of The Honest Company alongside Jessica Alba. The couple has four children: son Luke Hudson (born September 8, 2007) and daughters Eve Augusta (born October 20, 2010), Poppy James (born June 20, 2012) and Josephine Kate (born May 2, 2016).
