Joe Alwyn

Joe Alwyn is an English actor best known for his work in film and his high-profile relationship with Taylor Swift. Alwyn was born in London, England, and raised in North London. He grew up in a creative household and expressed an early interest in music before turning his sights on acting. He attended the City of London School before enrolling at the University of Bristol, where he earned a degree in English literature and drama. He later trained at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 2015.

While still in drama school, Alwyn caught the attention of an agent that helped him land his first big role just a year after graduating. He made his film debut in Ang Lee’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk in 2016, beating out thousands of actors for the lead role. The performance introduced him to international audiences and positioned him as a breakout newcomer in film.

Alwyn has since appeared in a range of projects including The Favourite (2018), Mary Queen of Scots (2018), Boy Erased (2018), Harriet (2019) and Stars at Noon (2022). He is also known for his collaborations with director Yorgos Lanthimos, appearing in The Favourite and Kinds of Kindness (2024). In addition to acting, Alwyn has cowritten songs with ex-girlfriend Swift under the pseudonym William Bowery, contributing to albums Folklore (2020) and Evermore (2020), earning a Grammy Award for the former as a producer. He also contributed to her 2022 project Midnights.

In 2025, Alwyn acted in the period drama Hamnet, sharing the screen with Paul Mescal.

Alwyn was in a long-term relationship with Swift from 2016 until their split in 2023.
