Karla Sofía Gascón
Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón got her start on telenovelas in 1995, two decades before she publicly came out as transgender.
Gascón went on to star in Flour, Rebel, Prelude, Drunk History, The Lord of the Skies and 2024’s Emilia Pérez. In Jacques Audiard’s Oscar-nominated musical film, Gascón portrayed a Mexican cartel leader who hired an attorney to fake their death to undergo gender-affirming surgery. Gascón was nominated for a 2025 Golden Globe Award and a 2025 Academy Award. She was the first openly transgender actress to be nominated for Best Actress at both award shows.
Emilia Pérez premiered in summer 2024 at the Cannes Film Festival, during which Gascón won Best Actress alongside costars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez.
Gascón, who publicly came out as transgender in 2018, is married to Marisa Gutiérrez. They welcomed a daughter in 2011.
