Michael Che (born Michael Che Campbell) is a comedian, writer and actor best known as coanchor of Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” and for being the first Black head writer in the show’s history. Che was born in Manhattan, New York, and raised on the Lower East Side as the youngest of seven children. He graduated from the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. Before comedy, he worked various jobs, including at a car dealership and selling T-shirts featuring his own artwork.

He began performing stand-up in the early 2000s, quickly gaining attention for his observational style. In 2013, Che joined The Daily Show With Jon Stewart as a correspondent but left after a short stint to join Saturday Night Live later that year as a writer. In 2014, he was promoted to coanchor of “Weekend Update” alongside Colin Jost, becoming the first Black anchor in the segment’s history.

In addition to SNL, Che created and starred in the HBO Max sketch comedy series That Damn Michael Che in 2021. He has also appeared in Top Five (2015), Detroiters and The Other Two, and has performed in stand-up specials including, Michael Che Matters on Netflix.

Che has kept his personal life private and has not publicly confirmed any long-term relationships or marriages.
