About

Mindy Kaling is a Tony Award-winning actress and comedian. Kaling was born to Indian immigrants in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She went on to intern at Late Show with Conan O’Brien and began doing stand up comedy.

After college, Kaling and her former roommate Brenda Withers wrote a satirical play entitled Matt & Ben, with Kaling playing the part of Ben Affleck in 2002. After witnessing her performance, The Office producer Greg Daniels hired her to join the writing staff of the NBC comedy, which aired from 2005 to 2013. In addition to writing, Kaling became a series regular as Kelly Kapoor.

The actress has also appeared in movies such as No Strings Attached (2011), Ocean’s 8 (2018) and Locked Down (2021). She starred in the sitcom The Mindy Project, which she also created and coproduced, from 2012 to 2017. She has also won a Tony Award for Best Musical as a producer for A Strange Loop.

The actress has also authored multiple books, including her memoir Why Not Me? (2011). She is also the cocreator, writer and executive producer of two hit teen shows, HBO Max’s The Sex Lives of College Girls, which debuted in 2021, and Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, which aired from 2020 to 2023.

Kaling is a single mom. She welcomed daughter Katherine in 2017, son Spencer in 2020 and daughter Anne in 2024. She has not publicly confirmed the identity of their father.
