Phil McGraw

Phil McGraw, professionally known as Dr. Phil, is a television personality, author and psychologist best known as the host of the long-running daytime talk show, Dr. Phil. McGraw was born in Vinita, Oklahoma, and raised in Texas. He attended Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology. He went on to receive a master’s in experimental psychology and a PhD in clinical psychology from the University of North Texas before beginning his career in private practice.

McGraw first came to national attention in the 1990s, when he began appearing on reality television. His no-nonsense style quickly resonated with audiences, leading to the launch of Dr. Phil in 2002. The program became one of the most successful daytime talk shows of its era, running for over two decades. Beyond television, McGraw has authored several best-selling self-help books and produced spin-off shows including The Doctors and House Calls with Dr. Phil. In 2024, he launched the cable network Merit Street Media.

McGraw married his first wife, Debbie Higgins, in 1970, though the marriage ended in divorce three years later. In 1976, he wed Robin McGraw. The couple share sons Jay (born in 1979) and Jordan (born in 1986).
