Dave Matthews
Dave Matthews is a musician best known for being the frontman for the Dave Matthews Band.
Matthews was born in Johannesburg but relocated to Yorktown Heights, New York after his father got a job at IBM. Throughout his childhood, Matthews moved around between South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.
While Matthews picked up his first acoustic guitar at 9 years old, he didn’t start performing publicly until the 1980s. He began playing live in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he ended up meeting his future collaborator, Tim Reynolds.
In 1991, Matthews formed the Dave Matthews Band with LeRoi Moore, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, Peter Griesar and Boyd Tinsley. Three years later, the group signed with RCA Records and released their debut album, Under the Table and Dreaming. The record was certified six times platinum and earned the group a Grammy.
In addition to his work with the Dave Matthews Band, Matthews has also released solo music. In 2003, he dropped the album Some Devil, which went platinum. His song “Gravedigger” won him a Grammy in 2004.
Matthews married his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer Ashley Harper, in 2000. The couple share three children.
