About

Bono (born Paul David Hewson) is an Irish singer, songwriter and activist best known as the lead vocalist of the rock band U2. Bono grew up in the suburbs of Dublin, Ireland, and attended Mount Temple Comprehensive School where he met his future bandmates.

In 1976, Bono joined guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. to form U2. The band gained a following with their 1980 debut album, Boy, but broke through internationally with their 1983 release, War, which featured the hit single “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” The success of The Joshua Tree in 1987 cemented U2 as one of the world’s biggest bands and earned them multiple Grammy Awards.

Over the decades, Bono has led U2 through chart-topping albums like Achtung Baby (1991), All That You Can’t Leave Behind (2000), How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (2004) and Songs of Experience (2017). The band has been awarded more than 20 Grammys and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

In addition to his music, Bono is known for his activism and has been frequently involved with humanitarian and social justice organizations.
Bono married Ali Hewson in 1982. They share children Jordan, Eve, Elijah and John.
