Eric McCormack grew up in Canada, getting his start in acting during high school. In 1985, McCormack left Ryerson University to be part of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where he honed his craft for five years.

After moving to Los Angeles, McCormack had a few minor roles on episodes of Street Legal and more before playing Detective Eric Rothman on Street Justice from 1992 to 1993. He went on to star on Lonesome Dove: The Series, Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years, before landing the role of Will Truman on Will & Grace.

McCormack played Will on the NBC series from 1998 to 2006, earning an Emmy for his character in 2001. The series shot him to superstardom. In 2017, he reprised the role for three more seasons until the show wrapped for good in 2020.

During his Will & Grace break, McCormack voiced characters on Pound Puppies and starred on Perception. He also played Grant MacLaren on Netflix’s Travelers from 2016 to 2018 and appeared on Departure, Slasher and The Other Black Girl. He made his debut as Kevin Anderson on Nine Bodies in A Mexican Morgue in March 2025.

McCormack’s career also includes Broadway. He made his debut in 2001’s The Music Man. In 2023, he performed as part of The Cottage cast.

McCormack married Janet Leigh Holden in 1997. The couple welcomed their only son, Finnigan “Finn,” in July 2002. Holden filed for divorce in November 2023 after 26 years of marriage.
