Fiona Apple
Fiona Apple (born Fiona Apple McAfee-Maggart) is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and pianist. Apple is the youngest daughter of actor Brandon Maggart, and she spent much of her childhood in Harlem. She began playing piano at age 8 and subsequently began writing her own songs.
In 1994, Apple’s demo tape caught the attention of Sony Music executives, leading to the release of her debut album Tidal (1996). The album’s breakout single “Criminal” won her a Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. Known for her distinctive voice and songwriting, she quickly gained recognition as one of the leading alternative artists of her generation.
She followed up with 1999’s When the Pawn… and went on a hiatus shortly after releasing the album, during which she considered leaving the music industry. After negotiating with her producer, she began working on her third studio album Extraordinary Machine, which was released in 2005. After a second hiatus, she embarked on The Idler Wheel Tour in Spring 2012 and released her album of the same name later that year.
In 2020, she announced her fifth studio album, Fetch the Bolt Cutters, which received three Grammy nominations, ultimately winning Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Performance. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with artists such as King Princess, Andrew Bird and Bob Dylan. Her music has been featured in the soundtracks for shows such as Yellowjackets and The Idol and films such as The Idea of You.
The singer was briefly married to photographer Lionel Deluy and has been romantically linked with director Paul Thomas Anderson and author Jonathan Ames.
