Gretchen Mol is a model and actress best known for her role as Gillian Darmody in the Emmy-winning period drama Boardwalk Empire. After graduating high school in Connecticut, Mol moved to New York to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and went on to study at the William Esper Studio.

After being discovered by an agent at her part-time job, Mol found success as a model before she began landing minor commercial and film roles. Her first big screen appearance occurred in the 1996 drama Girl 6. The actress was a Hollywood favorite in the late ‘90s and was named Vanity Fair’s “Next Big Thing” after appearing in films such as The Funeral (1996) and Donnie Brasco (1997). Some of her notable early works include Celebrity (1998), in which she acted alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, and Rounders (1998), which featured Matt Damon.

Mol made her theater debut in the early 2000s and appeared in the production The Shape of Things as Neil LaBute. She later made her Broadway debut in the 2004 production of Chicago.

In 2010, the actress signed on to HBO’s Boardwalk Empire as showgirl Gillian Darmody. The show won 20 Primetime Emmys and two SAG Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

The actress’s later filmography includes appearances in The Shape of Things (2003), 3:10 to Yuma (2007) and A Family Man (2016). She was featured in the 2024 films The Invisibles and Millers in Marriage.

Mol has been married to Australian director Tod “Kip” Williams since 2004. The couple welcomed son Ptolemy John in 2007 and daughter Winter Morgan in 2011.
