
H.E.R
H.E.R. (born Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson) is a Grammy–winning R&B singer and songwriter known for her emotive vocals, guitar work and hit songs like Back of My Mind, “Hard Place” and “Fight for You.” Born in Vallejo, California, and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, H.E.R showed an early interest in music. She began playing piano by age 10 and performing publicly under her birth name, Gabi Wilson.
Her early career began under her real name, when she was signed to RCA and managed by Overbrook Entertainment at age 14. She reemerged as H.E.R. in 2016 with the release of H.E.R. Volume 1. Her breakthrough came with compilation albums H.E.R. (2017) and I Used to Know Her (2019), which earned the singer Grammy nominations and national recognition.
The singer was awarded her first Grammy Award in 2019 for Best R&B Album. She went on to win four more Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Performance. She released her debut studio album Back of My Mind in 2021, and later won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah (2021).
The multihyphenate made her film debut in 2023’s The Color Purple, in which she acted alongside Taraji P. Henson and Halle Bailey.
