About

Jacqueline Kennedy was a socialite and the wife of the late President John F. Kennedy. Jacqueline spent her childhood in Manhattan before attending private school in Connecticut. By graduation, she gained a reputation as a strong equestrian and devoted student. In 1951, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in French literature from George Washington University.

The following year, the socialite met her future spouse John F. Kennedy at a dinner party. The pair wed the following year and moved to Virginia shortly after. She became an asset to her husband during his political campaigns after gaining popularity amongst his constituents and would accompany him to his speeches to increase attendance.

In 1960, her husband won the presidential election, and Jaqueline joined him in the White House as First Lady. Throughout the presidency, she was known for placing a high value on the arts and humanities. She was also a cultural ambassador, and she was awarded the French Legion of Honor by the French government for her diplomacy.

Following the assassination of her husband in November 1963, Jaqueline spent a year out of the public eye. She later moved to Manhattan and pursued editorial and translation work.

Jaqueline welcomed children Caroline (born in 1957) and John F. Kennedy Jr. (born in 1960) with John before his death. She remarried to Aristotle Onassis in 1968.

She was diagnosed with cancer in 1994 and died later that year.
