John Goodman is a Emmy-winning actor best known for his role as Dan Conner on Roseanne and its spinoff The Conners. Goodman attended Missouri State University on a football scholarship before switching his focus to drama and earning a bachelor degree in 1975.

Goodman moved to New York City in the late ’70s and took on voice-over work, commercials and small stage roles before landing his breakout part in the 1987 film Raising Arizona. That same year, he was cast as Dan Conner in Roseanne, which ran for nine seasons until 1997. In 1993, he was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy for his role. He reprised his character in the 2018 revival and its follow-up series The Conners, which aired from 2018 to 2025.

Goodman’s film credits include O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), Flight (2012), 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and Captive State (2019). He’s also known for voicing Sulley in Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. franchise. The actor has notably received multiple Emmy nominations throughout his career, and in 2010, he was awarded Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his performance as Judge Robert Bebe on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.

In 2019, he joined the cast of HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones as Dr. Eli Gemstone.

Goodman married Anna Beth Hartzog in 1989, and the couple welcomed their daughter, Molly, in 1990.
