John Mellencamp

John Mellencamp is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter. Mellencamp spent his childhood in Seymour, Indiana, and graduated from Vincennes University, where he studied communications. He played in several local bands before moving to New York to pursue a music career.

Mellencamp released his first album under the name Johnny Cougar in 1976. After modest success, his breakthrough came in 1979 with the album John Cougar and the single “I Need a Lover.” He gained national fame in 1982 with American Fool, which included “Jack & Diane” and “Hurts So Good,” the latter earning him a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance in 1983.

The Grammy winner followed up with a string of successful albums including Uh-Huh (1983), Scarecrow (1985) and The Lonesome Jubilee (1987). He began officially performing under the name John Mellencamp in 1991 following the release of his album Whenever We Wanted. Throughout his career, he has embarked on multiple headliner tours internationally and has collaborated with artists such as Bruce Springsteen. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008 and has been nominated for 14 Grammy Awards.

In February 2023, he announced his Live and in Person tour, and he released his 25th studio album Orpheus Descending (2023) just before concluding the tour in June.

Mellencamp has been married three times. He first wed Priscilla Esterline in 1970, and the pair welcomed daughter Michelle that same year before divorcing in 1981. He moved on with Victoria Granucci from 1981 to 1989, with whom he shares daughters Teddi Mellencamp (born in 1981) and Justice Mellencamp (born in 1985). Following their split, he tied the knot with Elaine Irwin in 1992; the two separated in 2010. They share sons Hud, born in 1994, and Speck, born in 1995. He has also been linked to Meg Ryan, Christie Brinkley and Jamie Sherrill.
