Maury Povich
Maury Povich is a TV personality best known for hosting the tabloid talk show Maury from 1991 to 2022. Povich spent his childhood in Washington, D.C. and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in television journalism in 1962.
After graduation, the TV host got his start as a news reporter at WTTG in his hometown and quickly rose to fame when he began hosting the midday talk show Panorama. He went on to move to both Chicago and Los Angeles in hopes of furthering his career, but ultimately made his return to WTTG in 1983.
After the formation of Fox Network in 1986, Povich was invited to New York to host the talk show A Current Affair, where he remained until 1990. The following year marked a career milestone for Povich as he began hosting The Maury Povich Show, later renamed Maury. The show was intended to be a blend of celebrity news and human-interest stories, however its claim to fame was the segment “Who’s the Daddy,” in which paternity tests would be revealed on air. It was announced in March 2022 that Povich was retiring from the show, making Maury the longest running talk show with a single host in American history.
The TV personality was a household name and, as a result, made guest appearances as himself on shows such as How I Met Your Mother and Black-ish.
Povich published an autobiography in 1991 titled Current Affairs: A Life on the Edge. He has also ventured into producing and boasts credits on the 2019 film Recon.
The TV host was married to Phyllis Minkoff from 1962 to 1979. The couple share daughters Susan Anne and Amy Joyce. In 1984, Povich wed news anchor Connie Chung, and the pair adopted son Matthew Jay Povich in 1995.
