Because Angie’s right leg meme will never get old! The Oscars are about the red carpet looks, who takes home the gold, and yes, GIF-worthy moments that go viral before the stars even hit the afterparties.
Before the 87th Annual Academy Awards begin on Sunday, Feb. 22, look back at Us Weekly’s top 10 best memes from over the years.
1. Angelina Jolie’s Leg
Leg bombing! Brad Pitt’s wife turned heads (over and over again) in 2012 when she showed off a crazy amount of leg in a high-slit black Versace frock. Her cringe-worthy pose was caught on camera on the red carpet and as she presented onstage. Viewers soon duplicated her right leg in Photoshopped pics and the Twitter handle @AngiesRightLeg was created.
2. Leonardo DiCaprio Loses to Matthew McConaughey
Crying! The Wolf of Wall Street hunk has been nominated for an Oscar four times, but has yet to come out on top. In 2014, the Twitter hashtag “#PoorLeo” began to trend when he lost in the Best Actor category to the Dallas Buyers Club star.
3. Jennifer Lawrence Trips
Most graceful fall ever? Gasps were heard ’round the world when the actress fell to her knees in her Dior Haute Couture gown while making her way to the stage to accept the Best Actress Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook in 2013. “You guys are just standing up because you feel bad that I fell — it’s really embarrassing,” she said at the podium. “This is nuts!”
4. Jennifer Lopez May Have Had a Nip Slip
Whether she did or didn’t, viewers went crazy at the idea that the “Booty” singer showed a little too much skin in 2012. Dressed in a custom Zuhair Murad gown, the questionable incident occurred onstage as she presented the Best Costume Design and Best Makeup category with Cameron Diaz.
5. Ellen DeGeneres’ Epic Selfie
Call it a day! The comedienne created one of the most memorable Oscar moments of all time when she gathered 10 stars to take a selfie while hosting in 2014. The snapshot (the most retweeted ever) included Jennifer Lawrence, Jared Leto, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Lupita Nyong’o, Lupita’s brother Peter, Meryl Streep, and Bradley Cooper.
6. Jennifer Lawrence Falls — Again!
Double the nightmare! The American Hustle star face-planted into her best friend Laura Simpson while walking the red carpet outside L.A.’s Dolby Theatre in 2014. “We finally arrive at the red carpet and as we exit the car, my date eats sh-t and uses my freshly done Lauren Conrad updo to break her fall,” Simpson later said in a blog post. “The crowd goes wild. There are flashbulbs and people circling, yet no one asks if I need any help because unless you are famous at the Oscars, you are completely invisible.”
7. Jared Leto Is Jesus
No, really. Fans watching the Oscars in 2014 quickly put down their popcorn and got to meme making when they saw Jared Leto step out on the red carpet. The Dallas Buyers Club star and Best Supporting Actor winner resembled Jesus because of his long flowing locks.
8. Benedict Cumberbatch Photobomb
Sly Sherlock! A year before his Oscar-nominated performance in The Imitation Game, the much-memed about Brit decided to kick up his heels on the 2014 red carpet. The Sherlock star jumped up in the air twice to photobomb U2 members Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr.
9. John Travolta’s “Adele Dazim” Flub
Wait, what did he just say? The Grease star butchered Idina Menzel’s name while introducing her “Let It Go” performance in 2014. “Adele Dazim” became a Twitter handle and everyone was able to generate their own “Adele Dazim” name. The Broadway vet later admitted that the mishap threw her off for “eight seconds” but that Travolta sent her a “gorgeous email” afterward.
10. Wizard Hair, Y’all
Apparently you had to have crazy long hair to win an Oscar in 2013. Viewers couldn’t help but notice the resemblance between Life of Pi’s cinematographer Claudio Miranda, Skyfall’s Per Hallberg, and Zero Dark Thirty’s Paul N.J. Ottosson at the star-studded event. Each one wore black tuxes and showed off their unkept locks at the star-studded event.
