Maura Tierney is an actress best known for her roles on ER, NewsRadio and The Affair. Tierney was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, where she attended Notre Dame Academy in Hingham before studying drama at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Tierney began her career in the early 1990s with roles in TV movies and guest appearances on shows like Law & Order and The Van Dyke Show. She later gained recognition playing Lisa Miller on NBC’s NewsRadio from 1995 to 1999. Her major breakthrough came in 1999 when she joined the cast of ER as Dr. Abby Lockhart, a role she played for nearly a decade.

Her performance on ER earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2001. Tierney went on to star in the Showtime series The Affair, which earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2016. Her other notable credits include Rescue Me, The Good Wife, Your Honor and American Rust. On the big screen, she’s appeared in films such as Liar Liar (1997), Primary Colors (1998), Insomnia (2002) and Beautiful Boy (2018).

Tierney tied the knot with actor and director Billy Morrissette in 1993. The couple divorced in 2006.
