Billy Crudup

Billy Crudup (born William Gaither Crudup) is an actor best known for his work on both stage and screen, including roles in Almost Famous, Watchmen and The Morning Show. Born in Manhasset, New York, Crudup was raised in Texas following his parents’ divorce. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a bachelor’s degree before completing a master of fine arts at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, focusing on classical theater training. He graduated in 1994 before beginning his professional acting career.

Crudup began his career in the mid-1990s with stage work and supporting film roles. He gained early attention for his performances in Sleepers (1996) and Inventing the Abbotts (1997). His breakthrough came in 2000 with his portrayal of rock guitarist Russell Hammond in Almost Famous, establishing him as a leading actor.

Over the years, Crudup has starred in films like Big Fish (2003), Mission: Impossible III (2006) and Justice League (2017). On television, he starred in Watchmen, Gypsy and Hello Tomorrow. He joined The Morning Show in 2019 as Cory Ellison, earning two Emmy Awards for his performance. On Broadway, Crudup has received multiple Tony Awards, including wins for The Coast of Utopia and Harry Clarke, reinforcing his reputation as a respected stage actor.

Crudup was in a long-term relationship with Mary-Louise Parker from 1996 to 2003. They share one son, William Atticus Parker (born in 2004). He went on to briefly date actress Claire Danes until 2006. In 2023, Crudup eloped with actress Naomi Watts.
