Jill Biden was born in 1951 in Hammonton, New Jersey, and grew up in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Upper Moreland High School in 1969 before pursuing a degree from the University of Delaware. The next year, Jill wed Bill Stevenson, whom she split from in 1975.

Jill received a bachelor’s degree in English in 1975, the same year she met Joe Biden. The couple tied the knot in 1977 at New York City’s United Nations Chapel and she became the mother to his two sons, Joseph “Beau” III and Hunter Biden. (Joe’s late wife Neilia Hunter and daughter Naomi died in 1972 in a car accident.) Jill and Joe welcomed daughter Ashley in 1981.

Jill continued her education, receiving a Master of Education from West Chester University in 1981 and a Master of Arts in English from Villanova University in 1987. She also earned a Doctor of Education in educational leadership from the University of Delaware in 2007.

Jill was by her husband’s side when he served as vice president of the United States for two terms under former President Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017. Jill went on to become the first lady after Joe was elected as the 46th president of the United States. Joe ultimately opted out of running for a second term, leaving the White House in 2025. Later that year, news broke that Joe was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
