The young actress landed a number of minor roles in both film and on television. In 2000, Graham landed her breakout role on The WB (and later CW) hit Gilmore Girls, where she remained a star until the show’s end in 2007. This role earned her the Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series (Drama) in 2001. Following her Gilmore Girls success, Graham signed on to the NBC family drama Parenthood, which she starred in from 2010 to 2015. She has appeared in movies such as Because I Said So (2007) and Evan Almighty (2007).

The actress reprised her role as Lorelai in the Netflix revival Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (2016). She starred in the 2021 Disney+ series The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and a few years later signed on to the Tubi comedy The Z-Suite, which debuted in 2025, as advertising agency CEO Monica Fraizer. She also starred in the 2025 film Twinless opposite Dylan O’Brien.

Graham is also a New York Times bestselling author and published her debut novel Someday, Someday, Maybe in 2013. Her first memoir, Talking As Fast As I Can, hit shelves in 2016 and she followed that with Have I Told You This Already? in 2022.

In 2010, Graham began dating Parenthood costar Peter Krause. The pair split in 2021.
