Short began his career in Canadian television and theater, joining the cast of Second City Television in the early 1980s, where he created memorable characters, including Ed Grimley. He moved to Saturday Night Live for the 1984 to 1985 season, further cementing his reputation in sketch comedy. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he transitioned to film, starring in projects such as Three Amigos (1986), Innerspace (1987) and Father of the Bride (1991).
