About

Mary J. Blige is a Grammy-winning singer and actress aptly known as the “Queen of Hip-Hop Soul,” with a career defined by chart-topping hits. Blige spent her childhood in Richmond Hill, Georgia, before moving to Yonkers, New York. She first began singing as a child in church and after recording an impromptu version of Anita Baker’s “Caught Up in the Rapture,” landed a record deal with Uptown Records as a backup vocalist.

Blige released her debut album What’s the 411? in 1992, helping to curate the R&B sound of the era. She followed with My Life (1994), earning critical acclaim before releasing numerous multi-platinum albums, including Share My World (1997) and No More Drama (2001). Over the years, she has won multiple Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album.

The singer later expanded into acting, with her role in Mudbound (2017) earning her an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She went on to star in the Starz series Power Book II: Ghost.

In her personal life, Blige married her former manager Kendu Isaacs in 2003. She filed for divorce in 2016 and the split was finalized in 2018. In 2024, she shared she had moved on but has kept the identity of her significant other private.
