About

Actress Saoirse Ronan was born in the Bronx, New York to Irish parents Monica and Paul Ronan — both from Dublin. When she was 3 years old the family moved back to Dublin, where Ronan was raised. Ronan was also raised in the small Irish townland of Ardattin, County Carlow.

Her first roles as a young actress were in Atonement, Hanna, Death Defying Acts, I Could Never Be Your Woman, The Lovely Bones, The Way Back and The Host. Ronan later landed more coming-of-age roles in films like Brooklyn, Lady Bird, On Chesil Beach, Little Women and Mary Queen of Scots. She also starred in singer Ed Sheeran’s music video for “Galway Girl.”

In 2018, Ronan won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy for Lady Bird. She has been nominated four times for an Oscar and frequently collaborates with director Greta Gerwig. She received additional Oscar buzz for her performances in 2024’s The Outrun and Blitz.

Ronan married Scottish actor Jack Lowden (Mary Queen of Scots, The Outrun) in a private ceremony held in Edinburgh in July 2024.
