About

Sofia Coppola is an Oscar-winning filmmaker, screenwriter and producer known for directing films including Lost in Translation, The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette. Sofia is the daughter of acclaimed director Francis Ford Coppola and artist Eleanor Coppola. She was raised in Rutherford, California, spending most of her childhood around film sets while her father worked in Hollywood. Coppola attended Mills College and later studied painting and photography at the California Institute of the Arts before shifting her focus to filmmaking and fashion.

Coppola first appeared onscreen as a child in several of her father’s films, including The Godfather (1990). After briefly pursuing acting and launching the clothing line Milkfed, she transitioned behind the camera and made her feature directorial debut with The Virgin Suicides in 1999. Her breakthrough came with 2003’s Lost in Translation, starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and a nomination for Best Director.

She went on to direct a slew of high-profile films, including Marie Antoinette (2006), Somewhere (2010), The Bling Ring (2013), The Beguiled (2017) and Priscilla (2023).

Coppola married director Spike Jonze in 1999 before the pair divorced in 2003. She later began a relationship with musician Thomas Mars, the lead singer of Phoenix, and the couple married in 2011. They share daughters Romy Mars (born in 2006) and Cosima Mars (born in 2010).
