Tim Burton

Tim Burton is a filmmaker, animator and artist best known for his gothic fantasy style in films like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas. Burton developed an early interest in drawing and horror films. He attended the California Institute of the Arts, where he studied character animation and created several short films that caught the attention of Walt Disney Studios.

Burton started his career as an animator at Disney in the early 1980s, working on projects like The Fox and the Hound before directing his breakout short Frankenweenie in 1984. He gained major recognition after directing Pee-wee’s Big Adventure in 1985, which led to a string of box office hits. His 1989 version of Batman, starring Michael Keaton, cemented his reputation as a visionary director.

Throughout his career, Burton has directed and produced critically acclaimed and commercially successful films, including Batman Returns (1992), Sleepy Hollow (1999), Corpse Bride (2005) and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007). His longtime collaboration with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter became a hallmark of his work. Throughout his career, Burton has received multiple award nominations, including two Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature for Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie. In 2022, he began producing and directing Netflix’s dark fantasy drama Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega.

Burton was married to German artist Lena Gieseke from 1987 to 1991. He later entered a relationship with Carter from 2001 to 2014. They welcomed sons Billy Raymond (born in 2003) and daughter Nell Burton (born in 2007). He was later linked to Monica Bellucci in 2023, but the two split in September 2025.
