About

Tina Turner (born Anna Mae Bullock) was a legendary singer, actress and performer. Born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner grew up singing in church. She attended Sumner High School in Missouri and later studied nursing before pursuing music full time.

She launched her career in the late 1950s as part of the Ike & Tina Turner Revue, gaining fame with hits like “River Deep – Mountain High” and “A Fool in Love.” After leaving the group and her abusive marriage to Ike Turner in 1976, she rebuilt her career as a solo artist. In 1984, she released her solo album Private Dancer, which featured the hit single “What’s Love Got To Do With It.” The album became a massive success, earning her multiple Grammy Awards and launching her into global superstardom.

Turner went on to release several successful albums, including Foreign Affair (1989), Wildest Dreams (1996) and Twenty Four Seven (1999). She also ventured into acting, starring in films like Tommy (1975) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). She was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice — first with Ike Turner in 1991, then as a solo artist in 2021. Her 2021 HBO documentary, Tina, chronicled her career and personal life.

Turner was married to Ike from 1962 to 1978. She later married German music executive Erwin Bach in 2013. She had four sons: Craig Raymond Turner (1958-2018), Ronnie Turner (born in 1960), and two adopted sons from Ike’s previous relationships.

Turner died on May 24, 2023, at age 83.
