Whitney Houston
Born in 1963 in Newark, N.J., Whitney Houston — frequently referred to as “The Voice” — was a staple in the American music industry.
The pop and R&B singer debuted in 1985 with her self-titled album; this became the best-selling debut album of all time by a female artist. The Grammy winner has also appeared in hit films, including The Bodyguard and Waiting to Exhale. Houston, who was once considered to be a churchgoer and a “good girl” has battled with drug and alcohol addictions throughout her career.
Her marriage to R&B singer Bobby Brown in 1992 aggravated these issues. With a history of infidelity and drug scandals, Houston divorced Brown in 2007, after which she was granted custody of the couple’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina.
On February 11, 2012, Houston was found dead at age 48 in her Beverly Hilton hotel room. Her death is believed to be caused by a lethal combination of prescription pills and alcohol.
