Hosted by Today‘s Tamron Hall and Willie Geist, the fifth annual event — which is also broadcast live on MSNBC — brings world leaders, activists and A-list supporters together in an effort to end extreme poverty by 2030. The 2016 concert also includes performances from Major Lazer and Metallica, as well as special appearances by Usher, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, Ellie Goulding, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Chelsea Handler, Neil Patrick Harris and others.
Ahead of her headlining gig, Rihanna, 28, was named a global ambassador for education. The “Work” singer’s Clara Lionel Foundation announced a multiyear partnership with the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen on Friday, September 23.
“I feel strongly that all children everywhere should be afforded the opportunity of a quality education,” Rihanna said in a statement. “Working together, I know we can amplify our efforts and ensure that millions of children gain access to education globally.”
Last year, Beyoncé, Coldplay, Pearl Jam and Ed Sheeran joined forces to headline the 2015 Global Citizen Festival. The star-studded event included several once-in-a-lifetime collaborations, including Beyoncé and Sheeran, who sang an acoustic rendition of her hit “Drunk in Love.”
