About

Cyndi Lauper is a Grammy-winning singer and actress, best known for her hit songs that helped define the ’80s. Cyndi spent her early years in New York, and she began writing songs at age 12. She went on to briefly study art while performing with a handful of bands in her free time.

Lauper’s musical journey took off when she joined the band Blue Angel in 1977. The group disbanded, but Lauper went solo, releasing her debut album, She’s So Unusual, in 1983. The album included the chart-topping hits “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and “Time After Time.” The LP earned the singer multiple Grammy nominations and won her the 1985 Grammy Award for Best New Artist.

The singer continued to release successful albums throughout her career, including True Colors (1986) and Memphis Blues (2010). In 2016, she released her 11th studio album Detour, and in 2024, she announced her headliner tour Girls Just Wanna Have Fun Farewell Tour.

The Grammy winner later made her mark in theater with the Tony Award-winning musical Kinky Boots, for which she composed the score. She has also ventured into acting and won an Emmy for her guest role on the sitcom Mad About You in 1995.

Throughout her career, Lauper has also been an active supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, and she founded the True Colors United organization for homeless youth in 2008.

Lauper tied the knot with actor and entrepreneur David Thornton in 1991. The couple welcomed son Declyn in 1997.
