Mulaney’s big break came in 2008 when he auditioned for Saturday Night Live and landed a job as one of the writers. He worked consistently on the sketch series for four years (also appearing as a performer) and has since written bits for the show on and off. He briefly had his own series, Mulaney, in 2014, which he wrote and starred as the lead character. He also appeared on the Kroll Show alongside close friend Nick Kroll, with whom he starred in Broadway’s Oh, Hello in 2016.
The stand-up comic wrote episodes for Maya & Marty in 2016 before joining the Golden Globe Awards team in both 2018 and 2019. Mulaney created the animated series Big Mouth in 2017, voicing Andrew Glouberman as well as a few additional characters. He is also a writer and producer on the project.
The I Love the ‘30s creator was cast as the Footman/Mouse in 2021’s Cinderella and will voice Chip in the 2022 film, Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers.
Mulaney sought treatment for alcoholism and cocaine addiction in December 2020, checking himself into a 60-day program in Pennsylvania after being sober for 15 years. Five months later, the comedian and his wife of six years, Anna Marie Tendler, announced their divorce. Mulaney was linked to actress Olivia Munn shortly after news of the split broke. Mulaney and Munn welcomed son Malcolm in 2021. The couple wed in July 2024 and welcomed daughter Méi via surrogate in September 2024.
