About

Lucy Liu is an actress and director best known for her roles in Ally McBeal, Charlie’s Angels and Kill Bill. Liu was born in Queens, New York, to Chinese immigrants who raised her in a multilingual household. She attended New York University before transferring to the University of Michigan, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Asian languages and cultures. During her college years, she discovered acting after auditioning for a stage production.

Liu began her career with small television roles on shows including Beverly Hills, 90210 and Hotel Malibu before landing her breakout part as Ling Woo on Ally McBeal in 1998, which earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Her sharp comedic timing and commanding screen presence helped her transition into film, including a leading role opposite Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore in Charlie’s Angels (2000).

She went on to star in major projects including Chicago (2002), Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003), and the TV series Elementary, while also building a career as a director. Some of her later appearances include Stage Mother (2020), Presence (2024) and Red One (2024).

Liu has kept her dating life largely private. She was briefly engaged to Zac Helm in 2004 before they split later that year. She welcomed her son, Rockwell Lloyd Liu (born in 2015), via surrogate.
