Matthew Lillard
Matthew Lillard is an actor, director and producer. Lillard was raised in California and studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Pasadena. He later trained at the Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City.
Lillard began his career hosting a short-lived TV show called SK8-TV in 1990 before landing supporting roles in indie films. His breakout came in 1996 when he played Stu Macher in the horror hit Scream. That role, combined with his performance in Hackers (1995) and rom-com She’s All That (1999), made him a staple of ’90s teen cinema.
He gained major recognition for playing Shaggy Rogers in the live-action Scooby-Doo films in 2002 and 2004 and has continued to voice the character in animated projects. His other notable credits include The Descendants (2011), Without a Paddle (2004), Thirteen Ghosts (2001) and Five Nights at Freddy’s (2023). In 2018, he signed on to Good Girls as Dean Boland and remained with the cast until the show’s end in 2021.
The actor has also directed independent films and cofounded a tabletop gaming company.
Lillard married Heather Helm in 2000. The couple has three children: daughters Addison (born in 2002) and Macey (born in 2004) and a son, Liam (born in 2008).
