Anthony Anderson

Anthony Anderson is an Emmy-nominated actor, comedian and producer. Anderson was raised in Compton, California and graduated from Hollywood High School’s Performing Arts Magnet. He attended Howard University in the early ‘90s but took a hiatus after his junior year due to financial difficulties. He returned in 2022 graduating with a bachelor’s in fine arts.

Anderson began his career with stand-up comedy before landing early acting roles on Hang Time, NYPD Blue and Ally McBeal. He gained recognition in the early 2000s with comedic roles in films like Barbershop (2002), Kangaroo Jack (2003) and Malibu’s Most Wanted (2003).

In 2008, the actor joined the cast of the longrunning legal drama Law & Order as Detective Kevin Bernard. After leaving the show in 2010, he reprised the role in 2022 after the show’s revival. He became a household name as Andre “Dre” Johnson on Black-ish, which premiered in 2014. His performance on the show earned him multiple Emmy nominations, including seven nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Anderson also executive produced the series and appeared in its spin-offs Grown-ish and Mixed-ish.

The Emmy nominee has lent his voice to shows such as Doc McStuffins and films such as Ferdinand (2017). Some of his notable later credits include Scream 4 (2011), Beats (2019) and You People (2023).

In 2025, he appeared in the Amazon Prime film G20, in which he acted alongside Viola Davis.

Anderson married Alvina Stewart in 1999. The couple filed for divorce in 2015, reconciled, and later filed again in 2022. They share children Kyra Anderson, born in 1996, and Nathan Anderson, born in 2000.
