Sophia Loren
Sophia Loren was born on September 20, 1934, in Rome, Italy. Loren’s journey to stardom began when she entered a beauty contest at age 14, subsequently launching her modeling and acting career. Throughout the 1950s, Loren starred in several films including 1957’s The Pride and the Passion and 1958’s Houseboat. Loren rose to international fame with her role as Cesira in the 1960 film Two Women, which earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress. She continued to appear in successful movies and currently takes on selective projects, including 2009’s Nine and 2020’s The Life Ahead. Loren received an Honorary Academy Award in 1991 and the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes in 1995 for her many lifetime achievements.
Loren met Italian film producer Carlo Ponti in 1950 when Loren was 16 and Ponti was a married man in his late 30s. Despite the challenges posed by Italy’s strict divorce laws at the time, their love persevered. Ponti obtained French citizenship and finalized his divorce, allowing the pair to marry legally in 1966 after their previous 1957 proxy marriage was annulled. The couple welcomed sons Carlo and Edoardo in 1968 and 1973, respectively. Loren and Ponti stayed together until the producer’s January 2007 passing from pulmonary complications.
